Bernard A. Harris, Jr. was the first Black astronaut to ever walk in space.

I don't know how old you are, but Dr. Harris pulled off this feat when he was 39.

People wrote in these last few days and some of them wanted to know why I was focusing on Black astronauts so much recently.

I wrote them back saying that traditionally Blacks were not seen to be great in the math and science worlds. The reason that I put Black athletic acheivements up on my site right at the beginning of this month, was to sort of get it out of the way.

Everyone knows that Blacks dominate in sports and entertainment, but not many know about the Black scientists and adventurers and doctors and inventors. And very few people could even name one Black astronaut, even if they were asked that question during Final Jeopardy.

Yesterday I told you that the first Black astronaut ever was Major Robert Lawrence, Jr.

Today I am telling you that the first Black to walk in space was Bernard Harris Jr.
