Founded in 1971, Irvine is a master-planned community, the first and largest in the United States. The city was built around the UCI campus and two major employment centers - the Irvine Business Complex, near Orange County's John Wayne Airport, and The Irvine Spectrum about five miles away. Residential villages take up most of the area between these points while the city's northern and southern ends have been set aside as open space. Still young, Irvine is only fifty percent built-out and has a population of 130,00 that is expected to nearly double in the next 20 years. >>
