Plane Turns Back for Kids Left Behind

June 28, 2000 8:53 am EST CHICAGO (Reuters) - The crew of a Southwest Airlines flight to Chicago turned the plane around early on Tuesday to pick up three sisters who got off in Kansas City for a snack.

The three girls, aged 8, 9 and 12, got off the Chicago-bound flight from Los Angeles during a brief stopover in Kansas City to get something to eat, an airline spokeswoman said.

An airline employee noticed the girls, who were traveling alone, standing at the gate after the plane had departed and notified the crew. "About 150 miles (241 km) out, the crew were told the kids were supposed to go to Chicago and not Kansas City and went back to pick them up," spokeswoman Whitney Brewer said.

The plane's 135 passengers -- including the children -- finally landed about an hour later than scheduled in Chicago.
